Art Scarf Travel Diaries : Udaipur

Travel Diaries from Udaipur, the city of lakes, once described as one of the most romantic spots in India.

Nestled in the arms of the Aravali hills, Udaipur is set around gigantic manmade lakes, famed for the royal residences lining the edges, the chief amongst them being the City Palace.

Founded by Maharana Udai Singh II in 1559 the City Palace is a majestic site, overlooking Lake Pichola, a complex of 11 palaces, built by Maharanas of various periods, maintaining a beautiful uniformity.

The major portion of the palace is open to the public as a museum and is worth a visit. I highly recommend getting a local guide or an audio tour.

Below is a photo essay of some of the room and the courtyards.

The magnificent mirrored rooms. Interestingly, I didn’t realize I was in the center of the picture!

Another mirrored room.

Painted rooms, don’t you love the color combinations?

I will be using it in my next painting for the scarves!

An indoor swing fit (literally) for a queen.

The sun god made of pure gold worshiped daily by the royal family.

A breathtaking view of the Lake Palace, the king’s summer palace,

(now converted to a hotel) from the City Palace.

A room for carrier pigeons, in the days before emails and even before regular mail.

If you close your eyes, you can just picture being there, a bygone era of grandeur and beauty.

A few pictures while walking on the street. The vivid colors of Rajasthan!

The young palace guard with the cravat! Learn to tie one here.

Just taking a stroll on the streets.

I would highly recommend a boat ride on the main lake to take in the beauty of Udaipur.

Notice the canopy on the rooftop of this hotel? We ate at Upre the night before and it was lovely.

The suggested boat ride is best timed around sunsets.

The night lights by the lake and the bridge reminded me of Venice, and it was no surprise to learn that

Udaipur is known as “Venice of the East”. Our last blog post was about a Venice inspired scarf and

if you wish you can read about it here.

Another magical view of the Lake Palace and City Palace at night.

I have always been fascinated by Rajasthan and painted the young prince below, several years ago.

It is available here. I think I will be doing a series inspired by Udaipur soon!

Hope I was able to provide a glimpse into the splendor and majesty of Udaipur. I came back inspired to create and hope to share the results with you in the near future.

Have you traveled to a place that has inspired you?
